I'm actually looking forward to it. From the look of some of the solicitations over the next few months, there appears to actually be a storyline playing through the series. There has also been quite a bit of build up in the storylines leading upto this going back to House Of M.
I'm certainly not someone who blindly loves big crossovers, I thought House Of M was a bit dull, I liked Civil War, I had hopes for Secret Invasion but thought it was a big letdown and I thought that Fear Itself was OK but not great.
It doesn't surprise me that there hasn't been anybody here saying that they're looking forward to Avengers vs X Men as a lot of the guys here are more focused on vintage comics which in many cases means that they aren't into Modern comics and gives a "comics were better in the old days" vibe. It's not "cool" to admit liking current Marvel comics on a lot of vintage comic forums.
I certainly understand a lot of peoples being tired of big event after big event which is undeniably the way that things have gone. However, I can't really blame the big publishers for keeping on with producing them because, at the end of the day, they are very popular with the current readership. Readers of comics are buying these events and comic publishers are in it to make money, it doesn't mean that there aren't also good writers consistently turning out good comics with character development. Marvel has Ed Brubaker, Christos Gage, Dan Slott, Marjorie Liu, Greg Pak, Rick Remender, Matt Fraction, Peter David, Mark Waid, Chris Yost, Jonathan Hickman, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning who are or have been producing a steady stream of consistent, solid comic storytelling over the last few years. I have quite a bit of respect for quality comic writers these days as most conceivable stories have been told at some point over the decades and it must be a hugely dificult task to try to come up with stories that are fresh month after month.
The gimmicks and the hype surrounding the upcoming crossover don't interest me at all, I am hoping for an enjoyable read though and I'm looking forward to the teasers that they are actualy going to do something with Iron Fist again as he's just been a background character since his last series finished. I don't have great faith in Bendis as he seems better suited to "lone characters" such as DD or Ultimate Spidey but at least this is more of a colaborative effort so my fingers are crossed.
