Professional Grading Experts, PGX (formerly CGG and PGA) is a comic book grading and encapsulation service in Eugene, Oregon. Daniel Patterson is the owner and chief grader.

While no company is perfect, a good deal of public controversy has arisen regarding the quality of the PGX service, the professionalism and the impartiality of their grading.

The CBCA cannot take an official stance on PGX, however we strongly encourage collectors to explore the various resources available online regarding PGX:

They have clearly been discredited. I wouldn't touch them with a fifty foot pole.

But the sad thing is that while the online collecting community thoroughly understands your point, there are SO many who continue to give them their business. One of my local shops continues to use PGX strictly because of time and cost. Like it or not, PGX moves a LOT faster and costs a LOT less than CGC. For my shop owner, that's all there is to it. He's not really interested in what he views to be "online conspiracy theories," and so, goes with PGX. I've bought books from him for as long as I've lived here, and I know for a fact he is in NO WAY intentionally trying to use PGX as a means of getting unrestored grades on restored books. He just sees it as a cheaper and faster way of getting a book encased in plastic with a grade attached to it.

And for what it's worth, it's a shame PGX IS a cracked organization as I think their plastic case is a lot better than CGCs method of encapsulation.

Now, I'm the last one to defend CGC, but since they are the only real player, I can say that there is a reason why PGX is cheaper and faster ... their quality control is poor to non-existent. We bagged these guys about five years ago and the fact that anyone would even consider using them for anything other than basically buying a pretty case for moderns is beyond me at this point. Whenever I see a silver or bronze age book for sale or auction in a PGX case ... I click on past it.

Of the 150+ slabs I do own, I have one CGG slab, and I keep it in an airtight padded envelope so it won't infect the slabs next to it. :wink:

I was curious about this, too. I'd also be curious as to what grade you'd give it, if you ever did crack it out.

If I crack it out, it will just stay cracked out.

I'm not exactly enthralled with CGC's quality control these days ... I haven't submitted a book to CGC since 2006, and that, along with the fact that they've made some glaring errors in the last year or so regarding Green River pedigree designation labeling, has convinced me to keep this one book in its slab as a curiosity.

I did liberate that Bethlehem Sgt. Fury #16 from it's slab the other day, though.

I do not and will not use either company. One sucks completely the other is far from being what I would call a shining light of QA/QC. As I have said before (possibly even on this forum) neither PGX or CGC have any clue how QA/QC works. Both are biased systems and,most importantly, self policing. They do not have to answer to anyone and don't. Since the large majority of the collecting community have no clue what a true standards organization is they don't know what they are missing out on. Some that do have an idea are also more than happy to settle with the supposed next best thing because they don't think one could be achieved.

The recent whinging about the AF #15 that got a grade drop when submitted for Signature Series got the book bumped back up. Although CGC denied that the threat of a lawsuit had anything to do with it, I think it did. So while they don't answer to everybody, it seems a select few do actually get some juice out of them.

Of course, the fact that the whole complaint was over losing thousands of dollars as opposed to the love of the book may have influenced proceedings :roll:
