I just finished reading the first trade (issues 1-8) and found the story line to be interesting, but I don't understand why they needed all the violence. Seeing child characters completely covered in blood doesn't add anything to my reading pleasure. Also, I have to say that including a 10 year old girl ninja who kills 40 people with samurai swords and guns, shows absolutely no remorse and then returns to her normal life and never again commits a violent act is very weak. I personally find that writers who resort to extreme violence are writers that lack imagination. I would therefore say that overall I find it a poor product from Mark Millar which could have been much better if the concept had been handled differently.

I think that's Mark Millar's current take on Modern comics to be honest Mike, I read the first issue of Nemesis, and while it's a completely different concept, the violence was a bit too much considering these books are available to be picked up by minors.

Kick Ass had never interested me anyway until I saw a few of the covers then decided to look into it, but before I could get round to reading any we saw the trailer for the movie when we went to watch Wolfman, and I've never been anywhere near it since.

I don't think I'm missing out on anything special though.

I really have no interest in this title or the movie. Millar's overly hyped -- and weak -- run on FF was enough to sour me to his work.

This is the same reason why I find Garth Enis to be one of the worst comic book writers of all time. Ten years ago I read his Punisher stuff and thought it was terrible - poor story telling covered up by over the top violence. I also tried Preacher which was (and still is I believe) quite highly regarded. Not only was the story boring, but the whole unholy priest things has been done to death. Plus, when are we going to get over this vampire thing. It must be 30 years now (since Anne Rice's terribly boring Interview with The Vampire which was published in 1976) that you can't turn around without another vampire movie/book/TV show popping up.

Enis supporters make excuses for him by saying that he grew up in Northern Ireland and violence is part of his heritage. I don't believe that this is an excuse for being a bad writer. I also thought we were supposed to rise above our heritage and try and create something better, not just wallow in it.

Kick Ass is the definition of desensitization.

I might watch the movie because it doesn't cost much via Netflix. And if I don't like it, I put it back in the envelope, and whoosh! Gone.

No chance of buying it though. I'd be out around $15 and nowhere to go with it. Especially not when the Dark Horse "Conan" series just came out with volume 8. Now THERE is violence done well!
