Presuming everything else about this book is a solid VF. Does the small chip in the upper left corner knock it below VF?

My first opinion is no simply because I can't even make out a small chip in the upper left corner. :D

I agree with Mike that the chip just isn't very clear in the scan, could you do a close up photo, Steve?

The book isn't mine to scan any better. I'm trying to decide whether to bid on it. It's been described as a VF and it looks like a VF to me... just wasn't sure about the nib off the back corner. The seller describes it as a "tiny chip."

Here it is enlarged. It's blurry, but you can see the slight discoloration at the tip... that is the interior pages showing through.

I guess my eyes are pretty sharp.

It's still blurry but there's certainly no way I could believe that it could be VF from the look of the corner. It does definitely appear to be a piece missing, I just didn't want to judge without being able to see it well enough. Personally, I'd give it a miss.

What's going on with the line that extends from the wing tip to the edge?

I was wondering about that as well! I don't think it'd be a VF with that piece missing. My guesstimation would be F or F+.

Tough crowd! :heckle:

Technically, it has to be a certain size to be considered a "piece missing." I estimate the size of this to be about 1/16th of an inch square... so it definitely falls under the definition of chip.

The 2nd edition of the OSGG has 8.0s with much larger corner chips (pgs 202 - 208), but they are on Golden Age books... so I am not sure it is a like comparison.

Frankly... I can't see it being less than a 7.0 worst case scenario.

If a lowball bid wins it, maybe I'll take a chance.

I decided to hold off. It wouldn't be worth it if it did grade less than VF. Glad I asked for back cover scan.

That was probably a good call Steve. I just don't know if you would have received a VF book. :(( Better luck next time! :righton:
