The 2009 NOD Comic Book Triathlon – Official Rules and Sign-up ThreadWelcome to the official rules and sign-up sheet for the NOD Comic Book Triathlon. This contest will consist of eight events in each of three categories: Grading, Trivia, and Guess the Cover. There will be three events each week, one in each category and each event will last 48 hours. The first event will begin Sunday, September 27 at
9:00pm EST.
Participants will be awarded points based on their performance in the events and the person with the most points in all the events at the end of the contest will be declared the winner. Half of the Grand Prize was generously donated by Brent Moeshlin of Quality Comix.
Prizes:Grand Prize - $500 credit at Quality Comix
Runner-up - $100 cash
Third Place – Free one-year membership in the Network of Disclosure ($20 value)
Rules:Grading – A high resolution scan of a raw book that has been graded by CGC will be posted. Participants will have 48 hours to submit the grade that they think the book received from CGC by sending me a
PM. Do not post your grades on a public thread. All grades submitted are final – there will be no changing your mind after your grade has been submitted. No questions about the book will be answered. At the end of 48 hours the CGC label and grade will be posted and points will be awarded as follows:
Correct grade – 5 points
One grade increment off – 3 points
Two grade increments off – 1 point
More than two grade increments off – 0 points
“Grade increment” refers to increments between the numerical grades that CGC uses, not whole numbers. For example the difference between 8.0 and 8.5 is one grade increment. The difference between 9.4 and 9.6 is also one grade increment. The difference between 6.0 and 7.0 is two grade increments.
Trivia – A comic related trivia question will be posted and participants will have 48 hours to respond with the correct answer by sending me a
PM. Participants may only submit one answer. Once an answer has been submitted it cannot be changed. The correct answer will be posted after 48 hours. Points will be awarded for the speed with which participants respond with the correct answer (based on pm time stamp):
Participants responding with correct answer within 12 hours – 5 points
Participants responding with correct answer within 24 hours – 3 points
Participants responding with correct answer after 24 hours – 1 point
Incorrect or no answer – 0 points
Guess the Cover – A small image of a zoomed-in area of a cover will be shown. Participants must identify the title and issue to which the cover belongs. After 12 hours, a second zoomed-in image from the same cover will be shown along with a written hint. After 24 hours a third zoomed-in image of the cover will be shown along with another hint. Participants will have 48 hours total to respond with the correct answer by sending me a
PM. Participants may only submit one answer. Once an answer has been submitted it cannot be changed. Points will be awarded based on the number of images and hints needed to get the correct answer:
Participants responding with correct answer before the second image is posted – 5 points
Participants responding with correct answer before the third image is posted – 3 points
Participants responding with correct answer after the third image is posted – 1 point
Incorrect or no answer – 0 points
After all 24 events have been completed the participant with the highest number of points will be declared the winner and will be awarded the Grand Prize. The participant with the second highest number of points will be awarded the Runner-up Prize. The participant with the third highest number of points will be awarded the Third Place Prize. The highest possible score is 120 points. In the event of a tie for first, second or third place, there will be a tie-breaker round between those participants with one event in each of the three categories.
