With all the hub bub about Walking Dead, I decided to order the trade to see what it was all about.

Note that DCBService.com has WALKING DEAD HC VOL 01 (O/A) (MR) (reprints 1-12) on sale for $17.99 ($29.99 retail).

http://www.dcbservice.com/index.aspx

Also, for 45 cents each, Image is offering a bunch of reprinted first issues, including:
IMAGE FIRSTS WALKING DEAD #1 (MR) *Special Discount*
IMAGE FIRSTS CHEW #1 (MR) *Special Discount*

BTW, now WD #1 raw "NM" copies with small scans are going for over $200 on ebay. Wow. :noway:

I'll be extremely surprised if you're not hooked immediately! Great buy by the way Steve :righton:

And I'm not surprised that the raw copies are going for that price now, the last four or five raw copies on eBy UK have hit up to $170. Personally I'd never drop that much on a raw book on eBay, but it seems the clamour for this book is reaching fever pitch. It just seems like a steal what I bought my 9.8 for just two months ago
:yipeeeee:

It's nuts... I can see dropping a few bucks on a book with a large scan... but there are "NM" copies with the small, angled digital camera picture going for over $200. :screwy: That's just asking for disappointment.

And by the way... when people are going loony and throwing money at books with small, angled digital camera pictures... that ship has sailed. Now is too late to buy.

9.8s have jumped over $200 over the last month or so. The 9.9 is a shame, the guy who bought it is trying to flip it for $5,000.

I wouldn't be surprised to see 9.8s hit $700 before the show pilots.

Oh well, may as well show it off...

And I've had two on hand on two different occassions, but I was only the middle man for the second copy both times :((

Let me know what you think mate. I was hooked from the first trade, and i read the first seven inside a week. I still have to play catch up from #43, but now I've built the run I can sit down and read it all - when I get the time!
If you're ever interested in a #1 9.8 give me a shout, I know someone who may be able to offer a GPA busting price on one.

So a #1 9.8 set a new bar last night on eBay by fetching $700, just like I predicted! Any show of $1k as the TV show hits??

Once a book hits $700, $1,000 seems like the next logical threshold. That said, I wouldn't want to be the buyer at $1K... I'm betting that is not a sustainable price.

I received the WD TPB Tuesday and dug right in. I think I am up to issue 8.

Overall, I liked it. Despite the gloomy subject matter, a fun, fast read. The characters are compelling and believable. The zombies are not as aggressive as I thought they would be. I expected there would be constant roaming bands of them hunting for fresh meat. Maybe that is to come later in the series as they run out of food...

A few comments...

* How is it Rick survived in a coma in the hospital bed for weeks with no one attending to him? When he woke up, the Zombies had taken over weeks previous. Also, why didn't they find him in the bed?

* The first few panels of Glenn, I was reminded of the Asian kid that helped Indiana Jones. Anyone else?

* I prefer the art in issues 1 - 6. Adlard, who took over in issue 7 is inconsistent... characters look different from panel to panel. And the linework is too heavy for my taste. I was not a fan of his X-Files work either.

* In one issue they went into the city and "disguised" themselves by wiping the decomposing flesh of a zombie on themselves. (It seems as though the zombies hone in based on smell.) Why are they not infected by rubbing the blood and gore all over themselves?

More comments to come as I read on...

Glad you liked it Steve. It is a great read, and does get more compelling once you hit the higher issues. Adlard's art does become more consistent and fluid, I really prefer his work to Moore's now.

I can't answer the questions about Rick, in fact I'd never really thought about it. I'd just read it and taken it at face value. Good points.

As for the infection question, I'm presuming it's something only passed on through bodily fluids such as a bite. I actually thought it was a decent plot device at the time.

Keep us updated, I recently caught up from issue #43 to #70 and loved every second of each book.

Just finished the second arc (issue #12). It leaves off with the group finding a prison which they plan to use as a base camp. Good stuff. Now I'll have to buy more TPBs.

You're reading a story about zombies and are worried about these details? :roflmao:

Remember - suspension of disbelief.

I just finished the TPB for issues 1-6 and have to admit it's a good read. It reminds me of Y the last man standing - different stories but good writing and the artist has been pretty good at telling the story. I'm not looking forward to a change in artist (which Steve pointed out), but I'll be getting the next TPB to see where this is going.

I got the 12 issue hardbacks. I read the first one so I'm good through issue #12. I'll order the next one soon. :righton:

I forgot about the HC price over at DCBService. I could have got the first one for the same price as the two TPBs.

So how many posts is the Century Club?

I read the first trade and liked it quite a lot. Certainly not what I expected. I enjoyed reading the Introduction discussing that it is not a horror book, but a look at how people act in extreme situations.

Just finished the TPB #3. It's taking me awhile because every time I go to the LCS the next one I'm looking for is gone. I can't say enough about how much I've enjoyed reading this (just finished reading Dexter too but that's another story - great book and cable tv series though). The only thing that I don't like is how the main supporting characters keep getting killed (especially the kids). I guess it lends to the randomness of not knowing whose gonna get eaten next.

I just ordered the Walking Dead Compendium which reprints issues 1 - 48.

If anyone wants my hardcover above, I'd let it go for $15 shipped in the U.S. Like new... gently read once.

I've been tremendously enjoying this series, and I NEVER read zombie/horror/etc books. It's just exceptionally well-written and well-plotted. I pretty rarely read moderns, but I'm hooked on this series, so that is saying something!

In the last few months, I've read TPBs #1-10. Just about to start on #11, and will pick up #12 when it's out, so I'm nearly caught up.

It is a really good series, probably the strongest Modern title out there at the moment. Robert Kirkman has really set the bar, his writing is so addictive and you can't help but get sucked in with a morbid fascination.

I'm selling off my run and am just going to pick up the comendiums, but there's no way I'd ever stop reading it.
