I picked this book up the other day and just finished reading it. I'm still not sure if I liked it or not (the story). It appears to be a 3 issue series, but I can say as usual I enjoyed the artwork. The books published by IDW (Idea & Design Works). The back of the book has pics of 3 variants and I'm sure the sketch cover is meant to be humurous (it's blank with art by John Byrne).

Is it a continuation of his old Dark Horse series?

Yes, but that's why the jury is still out on this one. I don't want to say too much and spoil it.

I won't touch John Byrne books at all. Thankfully I have very few left in my collection. His art is tedious and his writing is just awful. You want a book to fail put John on it.

Is this serious? He's had long runs on every major book in the business. I agree in that his Next Men books are not his best work and he's not known for his writing (although he's better than a lot of them), but to say a book will fail by putting him on it - I think not.

Obviously you haven't tracked him through his DC years in the last decade. He drove tons of people off Wonder Woman and everything after that started well but he would manage to drive away people after just a few issues. Shortly after coming on any book that book would eventually be canceled. Like I say his early stuff is okay but he hasn't done anything interesting either art-wise or story-wise for a couple of decades. He does his own thing because he thinks so highly of himself. I have no time or interest for Byrne any more.

OK. I've met him and he is a pompous arse and since I mostly collect Marvel I can agree with this. But I did read this book and I have to admit I'm planning on reading the next one to see where he's going with it.

I really liked Byrne back in the 70s - 90s. His run on FF was superb and I liked his take on Superman. I did like the first installment of Next Men. I haven't followed any of his more recent stuff. If the reviews are good on the new Next Men I will pick up the TPB.

Went to Hastings yesterday and for those that don't know it's a video/CD/Bookstore that also sells some really cool odd ball stuff (like my Duff beer hat). This one started selling comics a month or two ago. So, to my surprise they had a big red sign that read Buy two get one free (so I bought a few) hence...

What can I say - I've always been a fan of Byrnes work (whether he's an arse or not) and I've really enjoyed reading this.

Is this an ongoing series or a limited series?

It seems fashionable in some parts to blast Byrne now. But I agree his work is still decent and I have not seen a significant drop in the quality of the art. I'll give it a try. :righton:

I admit I am biased but there is nothing I like about Byrne any more. His art is not the worst out there but it hasn't changed at all in since the 80's. In some cases it has been bad. His run on WW v2 was horrid. He even gave up drawing backgrounds in many panels. While I don't puke at the sight of his art like I do with Liefeld's I would much rather look at almost anything else. Granted there are lots of artists that didn't change their style much or at all over the years they were in work at least they differentiated facial features and didn't have phases where they got lazy and left out backgrounds.

Sorry, like I say I am biased. Byrne turned me against him a long time ago and it has stuck. I don't touch a thing he does now.
