Without a doubt this is one of the best covers in the medium. John Buscema really outdid himself with this spectacular cover of Norrin Radd battling The Asgardian thunder gor. I bought this issue because of the cover alone. The story inside was so-so. But the cover is what drew me to this issue.

Your thoughts?

It looks cool at first glance, but I find that the SS looks like he is to the left of Thor and not about to crash into him. Also, if Thor was really winding up for a massive blow his left leg would be forward and right leg back so he could step into it. Finally, the SS is going to crash into him in a micro second. Thor has absolutely no chance of even starting his swing. Plus the SS is disproportionately small when compared with Thor. He looks like a midget to me.

You are absolutely correct.

I always thought the figures were angled oddly and presumed they were "cheated over a bit" to get a better "artistic" angle. I never picked up on the arm and leg dis-coordination, but you are right. It would be like a right handed pitcher leading with his right leg in the windup.

Not sure about the relative size. I always figured SS would be average size while Thor would be pretty big.

Despite its flaws, it is a great cover.

I agree, one of my all time favorite covers, with one of the coolest marvel characters ever, the surfer. However, what say you about the iss before, #3 with the intense bright orange, red, mephisto cover, and way cool story line? HMMMM? perhaps even cooler than the 4?

A brilliant cover that really leaves you gasping for more. Buscema rocks.

Even before I got into Silver Age, I still appreciated this cover - one of the best!

Fault can be found with most covers if you dissect them enough but SS # 4 is a great cover because of how dynamic it is. The cover represents the first meeting between Marvels biggest powerhouses and the cover promises an epic confrontation, both characters ready to unleash.

I thought the story was good too. Maybe it was nothing ground breaking but I thought it was nicely written and characterised.

This is definitely one of John Buscema's best, and most iconic covers. Not only is there an amazing sense of movement to the figures, it also showcases the knowledge and enjoyment of a master draughtsman at the top of his game. The sheer dynamic energy and sense of anticipation of the two heroes coming together make that cover, and the whole issue, one of the highlights of the silver age. As close as you can get to seeing poetry in motion.
