Does anyone know why the Circle 8 pedigree is not in the upcoming pedigree book? It seems to me like one of the best Atom Age collections. Does anyone have any info on the books? I tried googling and came up empty.

Ask and you shall receive.... sounds like a very interesting collection...

Circle 8
The circle 8 collection consisted of approximately 90,000 comics from 1950-1975. The collection was amassed by Tucson resident Edward Kerber. Mr.Kerber accumulated newsstand comics, newsstand overages, and collections. Some of the comics he would mark with an "8" with a circle around it, in grease pencil. This marking affected probably less than 1% of the comics, but is the reason for the moniker. The collection included newsstand quantities (50-200 copies) of many 1950s books, primarily Dell four colors and Atlas horror comics - including tough books such as Yellow Claw. Also included were VF or better copies of FF #1 (x1), Avengers #1 (x4), Amazing 10-40 (x5-10 of each), Detective 225 (x1) and multiple high grade copies of 1967 and prior Marvels from mainstream titles. Also included were less noteworthy keys, such as 5 Amazing 1s, 8-10 Amazing 14s, and multiples of just about every other Marvel key in lower grade.
The collection was found by Bulldog Collectibles owner Gregory Buls in 1989, and purchased en masse in 1991. Because of the predominance of higher grade comics, the market value of the books today would certainly stretch into the millions, perhaps 10 million USD or more.

I didn't realize it ran all the way to 1975. I think of it as a 50s collection.

Where did you get this info?

I've seen Everett cover credits on this one, but there isn't general agreement on this.

I don't think thats a Bill Everett cover. The womans face looks like an Everett paste-on but the rest looks like Burgos and Christopher Rule art.

Damn, GAK! I'm alright when it comes to identifying artists but a breakdown like that leaves me in awe.

 I like to have something to add to this forum. There is a small group of us who talk artists, especially Atlas art, on the CGC Boards, so you come to recognize that stuff later.

Your appreciation is... well, appreciated. We just need few more members here and a few more books posted and we can start discussing some art. :righton:

Working on this slowly and methodically. I have a pile at least a foot high of raw Atlas books, and I'm in the process of painstaking cracking every certified book I own as most have been in the holders way too long, and it scares the hell out of me doing so.

Night all. (:|

I always find it fascinating how the inker can vastly change an artist's style. Is there any knowledge base that states who did the inks on the above vs. this Journey Into Mystery #1?

We always hear about pre-code horror, but pre-code war is also quite brutal.

More Everett. I really like the way the dead branch is grabbing the boat like a claw. This really adds to the feel of the cover.

And I would gladly pay someone to get them out of the holders for me as Opening The CGC Holder is no help cause it doesn't say anything about the inner well.

That and having to face the unknown enemy when rowing is rather creepy as well.

I crack slabs all the time. Here is my procedure:

- Stand the slab on its end, grab the case in the middle of the side and pull it apart.
- Take a pair of scissors and cut between the book and the seal at the top. This pops the label off and it can be easily removed.
- Stand the book up again with the open end of the inside sleeve at the top.
- Peel each open corner down a 1/2 inch (sometimes it is easy sometimes it is hard).
- Reach in and pull the book out slowly. Do not slide your thumb between the cover and first page and rip the cover.

Well over 100 cracked and only damaged one due to carelessness.

Thanks Mike. The one part I wasn't doing:

I was cutting lower than that. :welcomesign:
