OK, this really doesn't make any sense to me. Why would the Pedigree.com collection be sold through Heritage instead of their own website/auctions? I saw where he said he didn't want to have a conflict with his cosignors but would it really be a conflict? I thought having the really tough sought after books would draw more people to your auction. That would mean MORE exposure for your cosigned books, not less. Also, if the owner is selling his books through a different auction site, it still competes with his own site! People will be going to Heritage for books instead of Pedigree. Finally, why would I cosign to Pedigree.com if they aren't confident enough to sell their own books there? Shouldn't I cosign to Heritage as well if the owner of another auction site is willing to use them? If they can get the best price for him wouldn't that mean they could get the best price for me as well? What am I missing here? :dunno:

Sounds stupid to me but I won't lose any sleep over it as I don't buy or sell on either site.

Here's the discussion over on the CGC Forum: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ub ... 71&fpart=1

Mike, the point that is most damning to me is the way he is undercutting himself to his own customers. He might say conflict of interest, but you're much closer to the mark in how this appears to collectors: if he sees Heritage as the more viable auction house, then how much less likely is Pedigree to realize top dollar for others?

At this point, he's conceded his ability to be a top performer for consignors.

Agreed. The "conflict of interest" explanation just doesn't flush.

He knows Pedigree can't hold a candle to the Heritage marketing machine and client base. You'd think pure pride would almost force him to sell his books through his own site, but apparently he is more interested in maximizing profit.

This is copied directly from the Pedigree Comics website (bold formatting added by me)...

"Consignors maximize their profits selling in the Grand Auction, more so than on any other auction site or auction house. We do not charge a buyers' premium, an amount that most bidders take into consideration when bidding in other sites (the bidders simply deduct the buyers' premium amount, usually 20% of the winning price, from their final bid, meaning less $$ to the consignor and more to the auction site)."

So, by going with Heritage, he is basically saying that he can get a better return by "giving up" the buyers' premium in the bid, which is 19.5% PLUS pay Heritage THEIR cut of the final selling price (let's use the 5% lowest commission rate Pedigree.com offers on their site since I couldn't find the rate on the Heritage site) and still make more money than what he could selling it on his own website. He is basically saying that his auctions are outperformed by Heritage at approximately 24.5% rate. I feel sorry for people who cosign to the next Grand auction.

Interesting analysis, mike.
