Re: Post your EC Comics here!

Here's another Crime Suspenstories pickup. #18 gets lost in the shuffle of this title's classic covers, but this is a pretty disturbing cover in its own right. Great Reed Crandall art on the interior story too.

Re: What's new in your Atom Age collection?

I bought this earlier this year, but just got to scanning it.

An uncommon book in any grade, let alone acceptable. Took me quite a while to find a copy of this... Cheyenne Kid 10. Steve Ditko (cover only) does Custer's Last Stand.
Very cool, never seen that before. :righton:

I joined the Crime SuspenStories 20 Club.
Dang Steve, that was fast! Great pickup! :)

Really nice centering on your copy too. Most of these #20s have a combination of a lot of white on the spine plus a wonky miscut. Pretty copy! :righton:

Re: Post your EC Comics here!

Here's another classic cover from the Shock run. (As a kid, I used to see this one in the Overstreet guide and it really freaked me out!)

Re: Post your EC Comics here!

I have to admit that I too have become more cover-centric in recent years. But that's why ECs are great, you can enjoy them on many levels. They are fun books inside and out. Another similar classic-cover issue I'd like to find a decent copy of is Shock Suspenstories #6. I think you were smart to lo...

Re: Post your EC Comics here!

I need to get one before it hits insane levels like #22.
Must admit, I had the same thought. I don't think it will get quite that crazy, but better safe than sorry!
I love these later CSS issues, and even besides the cover the interior stories are very cool.

Re: Steve Borock Creates New Comic Book Grading Company

Not crazy about that idea. It's like piling another subjective assessment on top if what is already a somewhat subjective grading assessment.
Yep, I had the same reaction. :dunno: Oh well!

Re: Steve Borock Creates New Comic Book Grading Company

It is a bit bland. What does the star in the upper left mean? To me, bland is less the issue (though I agree) than the random mix of fonts and the scattered look to the layout. I think the CGC label is much stronger and hope they will rework this one eventually. The star is supposed to designate a ...

Re: Steve Zarelli Space Authentication

Why do you think this is a fake? I'm sure Neil was just having an off day. :dunno: LOL You don't know how funny that is... and how true it rings. On the autograph chat boards, when someone is told an item is not likely authentic, very often the response is, "People sign their name different all the...

Pretty copy, Steve! And some great stories in there. For my money, they were really at the top of their game in the 1953-1954 period.

It really does. Tough to find them that nice!

Re: Point Five's Golden Age Nook!

And finally! Weird Comics #20, January 1942. Last issue in the series, with a cover showing Hitler personally kidnapping Churchill in a rowboat off the docks of London. Not just one of the scarcest Fox Comics, but one of the scarcest Hitler covers in superhero comics, which has given it a lot...

Re: Point Five's Golden Age Nook!

Weird Comics #19, November 1941. Another real toughie of a book. (From the cover dates, it looks like the title had moved to a bimonthly schedule with this issue... an ominous sign.)

Re: Point Five's Golden Age Nook!

Weird Comics #18, September 1941. Fun Eagle cover with an unusual deep purple background. Despite the monsters, this is actually a war cover too if you read the text blurb and look closely!

Re: Point Five's Golden Age Nook!

Weird Comics #17, September 1941. Awesome war cover. Note that as with #16's cover, Nazis are being used as cover villains, well before Pearl Harbor and America's official entry into the war. OK, now I'm going to indulge in a bit of chest-pounding here. :) All of these Weird Comics issues are 'uncom...

Re: Point Five's Golden Age Nook!

Weird Comics #14, May 1941. Great war cover (keep in mind, this was well before Pearl Harbor, but wasn't too hard by then to see which way the wind was blowing I guess). Sadly the spine is brittle on this copy, but oh well. It's such a tough book, I doubt I'll ever find a nicer one. http://i58.tinyp...

Re: Point Five's Golden Age Nook!

Yeah, these wacky stories are so charming! I really like this particular writer/artist... nice crisp art style, and he seems to have a lot of fun with these villains... I love how they doublecross each other. It's funny, I think you could rewrite this to be an early Batman story with pretty minimal ...

Re: Steve Borock Creates New Comic Book Grading Company

Sure, those sound good to me. Steve is one of the very few people with the instant credibility to pull this off, and I'm pretty sure it will do well in the long run. But it's funny, at the same time, I wonder if it will take the marketplace some time to accept the new company as an equal to CGC. We ...
